№.89 Opium-smokers 抽鴉片者

“Opium den” refers to a place where people can smoke, typically a leisure space for smoking, similar to modern smoking rooms. In Chinese history, smoking parlors were social and entertainment venues where people could smoke while socializing. These establishments often provided various types of tobacco and pipes. Over time, the term “烟馆” came to refer to places where opium was consumed.

“鸦片” (opium) refers to the substance derived from the opium poppy plant, which can be used to produce opium-based drugs. In the 19th century, the Opium Wars occurred between China and Western countries because the Chinese government attempted to ban the opium trade. Western nations profited significantly from this trade. Opium consumption in China led to social issues, prompting the Chinese government to restrict its use. Eventually, opium trade was banned, leaving a profound impact on China’s relations with the West.
